SAS Kids Fly Free Promotion

Traveling with our kids has been one of the greatest joys in my life. Unfortunately, even though kids don’t take up much room, the airlines still charge full price for a child’s seat on the airplane. So, when I read about the SAS Kids Fly Free Promotion, I became really excited.

Do Kids Fly Free?

In the United States, kids fly free from birth until they turn two years old. Once they turn two, then you need to buy them a ticket.

And don’t think you can fool the airlines by lying about your kid’s age. Even when your child is a newborn, they will request a birth certificate when you check in for your flight.

Some parents choose to buy their children seats before they have to so that the baby or toddler has more room to move around. However, I’m pretty frugal, and we didn’t start buying tickets for our kids until we had to. In fact, in the months leading up to our kids turning 2 years old, we flew almost every weekend because we knew we’d soon be buying additional tickets for the kid.

SAS Kids Fly Free Promotion

With the SAS Kids Fly Free promotion, each adult can bring up to 8 children with them to Sweden, Denmark, Norway, or Finland. Children have to be 11 years or younger to be eligible for this promotion.

You will need to buy an adult ticket, but each child is only charged the cost of taxes.

Kids Fly Free Promotion Details

For this promotion, you have to book your flights by October 5, 2017, for travel between November 1 through December 19, 2017 or January 8 through May 31, 2018.

You may depart from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Newark, or Washington, DC to cities served by SAS in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, or Finland.

Children must be accompanied by a passenger who is at least 16 years old. The site does say that children ages 6-11 can also travel as unaccompanied minors, so there are a few conflicting details.

I can imagine what kind of disaster it would be for a 16-year-old to watch 8 kids under the age of 12!!! Heck, I wouldn’t even want an adult to fly solo with 8 kids under the age of 12.

All children must have their own passport. Don’t worry, it is totally easy to apply for a child’s passport. And I recommend that all kids get Global Entry to speed up their wait through customs when re-entering the US.

You need to have a letter of consent signed by the child’s parents if 1) both parents are not going on the flight or 2) someone other than the child’s parents is the responsible adult. To be safe, I would have this letter of consent notarized. I flew with Timmy to Stockholm, Sweden in January 2017 and didn’t have a letter of consent, but it would have been safer if we had one.

I looked at a sample flight from Los Angeles to Stockholm in November 2017 using SAS Go Saver fares and the total taxes per child was only $51.09! What an amazing deal!!!

Kids Free San Diego all month long in October 2017

Christmas may be a child’s favorite day of the year, but I think that October is a kid’s favorite month. Here’s why. Kids Free San Diego is a promotion that runs each year and provides free entrance for kids at many local attractions! There are more than 100 promotions during Kids Free San Diego this October 2017. Pretty awesome huh?

As a Southern California local, October is a great month to explore San Diego. With Kids Free San Diego, there are so many fun attractions to visit it is a good thing that there are 31 days in the month!

The idea of Kids Free San Diego was started by the San Diego Zoo to celebrate the month they were founded. Soon the San Diego Museum Council joined in the fun, and now there are over 120 participating businesses. What a fantastic time to be a kid!

Visit California has some great tips to make the most of Kids Free San Diego.

Focus on theme parks and other attractions on Mondays when museums tend to be closed.
Be aware of Halloween-related restrictions at amusement parks which may close early to hold Halloween events in the evenings.
Plan your activities and hotel stays based on location because some attractions (like Legoland) are a 30+ minute drive away from Downtown San Diego.

Kids Free San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most popular zoos in the world. The zoo is so large that you could spend several days here and not see all of the animals and shows. Bring your walking shoes so your feet will thank you!

For only $12 more, you can upgrade your child’s ticket so it will include the Guided Bus Tour, Kangaroo Bus, and Skyfari aerial tram.

Kids Free Legoland

Legoland has been one of Timmy’s favorite theme parks the past few years. He’s really into building with Legos and it is so much fun to be able to build Legos inside the park, trade characters with other children and the staff, and see some of your favorite Lego characters come to life (like Ninjago).

Kids Free San Diego Safari Park

We held an annual pass to the San Diego Safari Park for many years. As an added plus, the annual pass provides admission to both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.

The people who run the park do an excellent job in creating an environment for the animals that is as close to their natural habitat as possible. One of our favorite things to do at the Safari Park is to take the tram around the park so you can witness the animals behaving naturally.

Kids Free San Diego Seaworld

Seaworld may have a bad rap after the Blackfish movie came out, but we’ve enjoyed visiting the park with the kids. Timmy and Scarlett loved seeing the penguins especially when the penguins are outside and just within reach. But their favorite part of Sea World is the Sesame Street play area. The would climb and bounce all day long if we let them.

Kids Free San Diego Museums

The San Diego Museum Council has coordinated the efforts of 43 arts, cultural, and science museums to offer free admission for children during Kids Free San Diego. With so many choices, there is something to satisfy anyone’s curiosity.

Some of our favorites are The New Children’s Museum, San Diego Model Railroad Museum, and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

With this promotion, a family of four can save up to $30 per museum! All you have to do is download the coupon from the SDMC website or grab a coupon at Mission Federal Credit Union and pick which museum piques your interest.

Timmy doesn’t start school until the end of August, but some families start in just a week or two. We all need to do some back-to-school shopping. How to get a free car seat from Hertz

One of the problems when traveling with children and renting a car is what to do about car seats. You can struggle with bringing the car seats on the plane. You can check them with the airlines and risk paying a baggage fee. Or you can rent a car seat from the rental car company for a pretty hefty amount of money. I’m going to share with you how to get a free car seat from Hertz as well as some other options.

Bring a car seat on the plane

I personally don’t like this option for small children because it is just one more thing that you need to bring on to a plane.24 With airlines cutting the seat pitch (distance between seats), it is harder and harder to squeeze anything reasonable into your seat.

Plus, car seats can be pretty heavy and bulky. And if your children fall asleep on planes like my kids do, the last thing you want to do is try to carry a sleeping child, your carry-ons, AND a car seat!

If you MUST bring a car seat on a plane, consider a car seat travel belt that will allow you to strap the car seat to your suitcase to more easily transport it to and from your flight.

Luckily, Timmy is old and big enough where we can easily carry his booster seat with us when we travel. So, that’s a reasonable option. However, for Scarlett, there is no way I would carry her car seat on to the plane.

Check the Car Seat with the Airline

If you want to bring your own car seat, the best option is to check it with the airline. However, be careful of airlines that charge fees for luggage. Luckily, most airlines waive fees for car seats and strollers, but check with your preferred airline BEFORE booking your flight! That’s one of the reasons why my preferred airline is Southwest. You can check two bags per person without any fees (as long as your bag is 50 lbs or less).

If your airline does charge for checked bags, consider getting the airline’s co-branded credit card that will waive fees for checked bags. My approach is that, if you need to check one bag, might as well save yourself the hassle of carry-on luggage and check them all. You’re going to be waiting around baggage claim anyway.

You don’t want to have to lug around a car seat, right? So, do what we do when we bring a car seat. Get a rolling car seat bag that is ideal for carrying not only your car seat, but also diapers, wipes, and a bag full of dirty kids clothes (when coming home from vacation, obviously).

This bag has shoulder straps to easily carry it while keeping your hands free, you can pull the handle like you would a rolling suitcase, or you can attach it to your suitcase and roll it around. Super simple and convenient.

Rent a car seat from the car rental company

Renting a car seat is a decent option when you’re traveling for just a couple of days. However, those daily charges of $10-$30 a day can really add up quickly! If you’re getting a really good deal on the rental car and using airline miles and hotel points for your stay, splurging a few bucks to avoid the hassle can certainly be worth it.

When you’ve decided that it’s time to rent a car seat instead of carrying one around like a pack mule, there are a couple ways of getting around paying for the car seat rental.

We brought Timmy’s booster seat and used the free rental for Scarlett to save money and have one less thing to carry around with us through the airport. As an alternative, if you can’t get a free car seat from Hertz, trying contacting the local AAA office to borrow a car seat. Keep in mind, however, that you’ll have to figure out how to get to the AAA office with your child without a car seat. Not all offices offer this service, so please call ahead to confirm that they offer this service to members.

If you’re a member of the National PTA, you can use the promo code 1929580 to have the car seat charges waived as well.

Kids Bowl Free All Summer

We normally talk about traveling with kids (with or without Mommy) on this site. But the reality is that most families don’t have the time or money to travel all the time. So, here’s a great idea for family fun that won’t break the bank. With this special promo, kids bowl free all summer! There’s no cost or catch. Basically, bowling alleys know that an adult has to go with them and kids get hungry and thirsty, so that’s how they’ll make their money.

On Friday night, we took Scarlett to the “date night” at her school. Happy Father’s Day 2017

I just wanted to write a quick thank you to all the Dads out there. Hope that you have a great day making some special memories with your kids, your parents, or whoever the special people are in your life.

Is it OK to travel without your spouse?

I travel a lot each year. Sometimes the travel is for work. Other times it is for pleasure with friends or with the kids. As much as I would love for Anna to be with me on these trips, that just isn’t going to happen with her demanding work schedule. And, that is OK. It truly is OK to travel without your spouse.

5 Solid Reasons Why You Should Travel Without Your Spouse

When I share how much I travel (in person or via social media), people often question why I’m traveling without Anna. Or they ask if Anna is upset with me for traveling without her?

For the most part, Anna is totally cool with me traveling without her. If we had unlimited money and a magic wand so she didn’t have to work, of course, I would make it happen so that she had the option to go with us. But I haven’t found the magic wand in any Cracker Jack boxes… yet.

#1 – Your Vacation Schedules Don’t Match

I’m lucky because I don’t have a set schedule for vacation at work. Aside from a couple of really intense periods each year, I can take vacation time anytime I like, provided that I have all of my work covered.

Anna isn’t so lucky. She has to work during month and quarter end. She has to work on weekends sometimes.

Because of her limited flexibility at work, we have to be careful when planning trips for her. Add in Timmy’s (and eventually Scarlett’s) game schedule for school and sports, and you can see why it can be tough for everyone to go on vacation together.

#2 – She’s Not Interested

As much as you love your spouse, you didn’t sign anything during the marriage process indicating that you were now becoming Siamese Twins and had to be joined at the hip.

They say that opposites attract, and that can be true. I’m a lucky guy because Anna enjoys pro sports almost as much as I do. But some wives are completely bored with sports. It would be a total waste of money (and total buzzkill on the mood) if you dragged your wife to a game in another city to see your favorite team, and she just played on her phone the whole time wishing she were someplace else. Right?

Guys, you might say the same thing about attending a musical or going shopping. Come on, admit it.

The better situation is to travel without your spouse and bring someone who does like the activities planned for that trip. And then make sure you plan something awesome that the two of you can enjoy together when you get back.

#3 – Mommy Needs A Break

Sometimes Mommy just wants a long, hot bath with a (large) glass of wine and a good book.

She’s tired of the kids being loud, roughing it up, and tattling on each other for the smallest infractions. This is where Dad becomes the hero!

Offer to take the kids out for the day or the weekend. Book a room at a hotel and take the kids for the weekend so that Mommy can recharge her batteries.

I do this a few times a year. We live in Orange County near Disneyland. If Anna just wants some time to herself, I’ll book a room down in San Diego and the kids and I will use our Sea World or San Diego Zoo season passes to explore for the weekend.

#4 – You Can’t Afford It

Face it, no matter how much you make, it never seems like enough. And it is OK to admit if you cannot afford something.

However, there will still be times where you want/need to take your children someplace. Most times it is best to save up a little longer so that you can afford for the whole family to go. However, some trips just can’t wait. For instance, a tour of prospective colleges for your high schooler or a when you’re the chaperone for your child’s trip out of state (ok, this one may also count as #2 above).

There is no shame to travel without your spouse on these trips.

#5 – She Doesn’t Get Along With Your Family

Just because your wife loves you, doesn’t mean she has to love your family. And your family may not like or approve of her.

Rather than make a trip to see family turn into something uncomfortable, it is OK for your spouse to skip the trip. I would say that not only is it OK to travel without your spouse, it is recommended for the sake of your sanity.

However, I would still say that your spouse needs to be the better person and attend special events, like milestone anniversaries or holidays, because you don’t want your kids looking back at old photos and wondering “where’s Mommy?”

Luckily for our family, Anna and I both get along well with our respective in-laws, so this one doesn’t apply to our situation.

It is OK to travel without your spouse. There are plenty of reasons why this is true. It could be conflicting schedules, lack of interest, personal time, lack of money, or family issues. Or it could be something completely different. Who knows? Who cares? The bottom line is that you should travel without your spouse on occasion. You will create some special memories when you travel without your spouse that are shared just between you and your kids. But, remember, it is only fair that your spouse also gets to create some special memories with the kids by themselves too. Even if it is just a “date night” with a Mom and her Son… encourage that bond. Your marriage and family life will be so much better off for it.

Legoland California Promotion – Buy 1 Day, Get 4 Free!

If you have young children like I do, one of the best amusement parks to visit is Legoland. The rides are geared towards younger kids, the lines are never that long, and there are plenty of interactive exhibits for the kids to play with. Right now, Legoland is even better with the Legoland California promotion that allows you buy 1 day, get 4 free!

Where is Legoland located?

Legoland has several parks across the globe.In the United States, there is Legoland California, which is Carlsbad… about halfway between Sea World San Diego and Disneyland in Anaheim.

Single day tickets just for Legoland start at $90 for kids 12 & under and are $96 if you are 13 years old or over. It’s surprising that only $6 separates child and adult ticket prices, but both Disneyland and Universal Studios do it the same way.

For an extra $5, you get a second day and entrance to the water park. And for another $5 ($100 kids, $106 adults), you also get entrance to the SEA LIFE Aquarium.

To really stretch your vacation budget, I suggest spending a couple more dollars and doing the Legoland California Promotion where you buy 1, get 4 free.

For $115, kids get access to Legoland California, the SEA LIFE Aquarium, and the water park. Adults are $6 more. The extra 3 days is only $15 more than the 3-park 2-day option above!

This brings the average daily price down to $23 for children 12 & under and about $24 for adults. Even with the 2-day options above, you’re still saving 50% on ticket prices with this offer. You can’t beat that!

Ok, you will still have to pay $17 a day for parking every day. For a family of four, that breaks down to $4 a person.

The Only Downside…

The only downside to the Legoland California promotion for buy 1, get 4 free is that all 5 days must be consecutive. In other words, if your first day entering the park is Monday, your pass expires on Friday whether you’ve used any of the other days or not.

If you don’t think you’ll go to Legoland 5 days in a row, you’re better off with the 2-day options above. With the 2-day packages, your second day only has to be within 9 days of first use.

My kids absolutely LOVE Lego, but I’m not sure even they would want to visit Legoland California 5 days in a row. For most families, I recommend either of the 2-day options that seem more reasonable considering all of the other entertainment options in Southern California. We have plenty of amusement park choices, the beach, Hollywood, and so much more that most families don’t want to spend their entire vacation at Legoland.

Welcome to DadsWhoTravel.com. My name is Lee and I travel all over the world with my young children. I’m married, but my wife doesn’t get as much vacation time as I do, so she encourages me to travel with our children.

There are plenty of family travel sites from a Mom’s perspective, but few from a Dad’s point of view… especially when the Dad is traveling without the support of the kid’s Mom. My goal is to inspire and educate all the Dads that traveling solo with your children is both possible AND rewarding.

I do have another blog called BaldThoughts.com that is focused on traveling using airline miles and hotel points. Those loyalty rewards allow me to travel the world at a fraction of what everyone else pays.

But this site is not about that.
